Scope & Content Note: This image documents investigations and construction on various units of the Flathead Irrigation Project. The Project was initiated to determine rights and distribute water originating on the Flathead Indian Agency in Montana to both tribal and non-tribal land. The establishment of the Reservation in 1855 preceded Montana statehood by nearly 35 years and presented many challenges in establishing senority and providing for equitable distribution of water for the irrigation of farms and ranches.

[eng] With the Rocky Mountaineer from Vancouver to Banff [dt] Der Luxuszug “Rocky Mountaineer” verbindet die beiden Städte Vancouver und Banff. Zwei Tage benötigt der Zug für die rund 1.000 km lange Strecke. Gefahren wird ausschließlich tagsüber. Flüsse bestimmen den Verlauf der Strecke. Kilometer für Kilometer windet sich der Zug über Gebirgspässe sowie durch tiefe Täler und Schluchten. Für den Schienenstrang bleibt oft nur ein schmales Stück Land links und rechts der Flüsse. Die Landschaft ist geprägt von endlosen Wäldern und schneebedeckten Bergkuppen. Rund um Kamloops ändert sich jedoch die Landschaft dramatisch. Sattes Grün, weicht einer wüstenähnlichen Landschaft. [Eng] The “Rocky Mountaineer” connects the cities Vancouver and Banff. The train needs two days for the about 1000 km long distance. Trips are day travel only so that none of the scenery is missed. Rivers determine the routing. Kilometre for kilometre the train twist its way along mountain passes and deep valleys. The landscape is dominated by endless woods and snowy mountains. Around Kamloops the scenery changes dramatically: A landscape similar to a desert, instead of a deep green.
